The Indian pharmaceutical industry stands at the third position in the world when it comes to drug production by volume. It produces 60% of the vaccines globally, supplying to the likes of WHO, UNICEF, etc. According to India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), Indian pharmaceutical sector is expected to be valued at $100 billion, while the medical device market is expected to reach $25 billion by 2025.

With COVID-19 hitting us all badly and the rising demand for medicines globally, the pharmaceutical industry didn’t pause its operations in order to satisfy the global needs. Although the novel virus did disrupt the supply chain management and resulted in slowing down the production. However, with the lockdowns being eased around the world, the production has now started in full swing.

Where does the Pharmaceutical Industry need our assistance?

  • The manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and drugs involves huge quantities of water in every stage of production including washing of solid cake, extraction, washing of equipment, etc.
  • This results in the generation of equally large quantities of wastewater in every stage.
  • And due to the rising issue of water scarcity, it is important to understand and develop methodologies for the treatment of this wastewater.
  • In order to achieve this, we put in our valuable research to identify the various sources of wastewater in the pharmaceutical industry and evaluate the most suitable technologies to treat them.
  • This evaluation process involves the proposition of strategies to recover valuable compounds to a large extent and make the wastewater reusable.

The Process

  • Preliminary Treatment - The wastewater is made to pass through a chamber where bar screens filter out the floating particles. The resulting water is then collected in a collection tank.
  • Aeration - The water collected is then aerated through air blower. The resulting water is then transferred to a neutralisation tank.
  • Neutralisation - This process involves the adjustment of the pH value of wastewater between 6-7 in a neutralisation tank.
  • Flocculation and Coagulation - Flocculating agent like Alum is added to the effluent to flocculate the suspended material. And, Polyelectrolyte solution is added to coagulate the suspended solids in the form of sludge at the bottom of the tank. The resulting solution is then added to a bioreactor tank.
  • Biological Degradation - In the bioreactor tank, nutrients are added for breaking down the organic matter present in the effluent. The sludge is then segregated from the settling tank and the water is filtered through an activated carbon filter.
  • Filtration - The treated wastewater is then made to pass through an activated carbon filter to remove the colouring material.
