The demand for clean water and industrial wastewater treatment has been on a rise like never before. Away from the drinking water needs, the government and industrial processes are dependent on effective solution of clean water supply. But counting on the various sources where wastewater is discharged, technologies to treat them would need special and distinct attention too.

Some of the few technologies that attain highest attention due to their performance are listed below…

1. Vacuum Evaporators

Also known as wastewater evaporators these are one of the most effective technologies when it comes to treating aqueous effluents. This technology is low-management and can also lead to a treatment system with Zero Liquid Discharge. This evaporator works under vacuum hence the boiling temperature of effluent is mostly lower. This saves energy and improves efficiency.

2. Vacuum Crystallizers

This technology enables formation of solid crystals from homogeneous, liquid or gaseous phase. This not so simple yet an important technology, forms solid crystals in the liquid solution. The solution is concentrated and chilled until the concentration of the solute forms pure crystals. Vacuum Crystallizers is a good option when tried to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge. This technology is aptly suitable for high salinity effluents such as brines.

3. Reverse Osmosis

RO is a technology that segregates solvent from concentrated solution by the application of pressure. The solvent goes through a semi permeable membrane from the concentrated solution to the diluted solution. The rejected fractions from this technology can be recovered by discharging or concentrating with other methods like evaporation or crystallization plants, to reach Zero Liquid Discharge. This is an efficient, clean and compact technology that provides high quality water from brackish water and sea water.

4. Micro-filtration, ultra-filtration and nano-filtration

Membrane filtration technologies produce high-quality water from various sources. In order to attain correct water quality targets, different filtration stages and membrane systems are put in order. The type of membrane depends on the particle or the ion size that has to be removed. The membrane range varies from micro-filtration, ultra-filtration and nano-filtration and lastly, reverses osmosis.

5. Membrane Distillation

Membrane distillation is a thermal process wherein only vapour molecules can pass through a hydrophobic membrane. The increased temperature of the feed increases the vapour pressure. This technology consists of several stages or effects resulting in improved separation. The membrane distillation process is not limited by equilibrium and hence the desired water recovery and reject concentration can be achieved.
